Audio book dreams

Last night my aspirations and focus played center stage in a dream. In the dream, a recording expert visited my in-home studio space and gave me feedback to improve the layout to maximize sound capture without undue background noise. He also listened to some rehearsal clips already recorded, which is what prompted him to look at the recording space.
My mind is focused on this project. I am improving my skills with the editing programs, familiarizing myself with terms related to recording and editing, and practicing my performance. I have a timeline. I want to have the first audiobook completed by August 1, 2020. That feels ambitious, yet attainable, especially with the kind support of folks like you. I am buoyed along by the guidance I have received so far from local recording professionals, and by the contributions of folks excited about the project.
Want to be a part of the process? Have access to a free copy of either "Travels of the Heart", "Wren & Ignacio", or "Tea of Tranquility" as soon as it is finished? Then contribute to the project here: BeWell Bohemia Audio Book Project
I am honored by all the support and interest. I will keep you apprised of developments.

Family Love is a place visited in "Travels of the Heart"

The countdown continues to the release of "Travels of the Heart", a collection of short stories and poems celebrating love in its many forms.

Each story reflects a creative exploration of love, and draws the reader into a moment, a relationship, an image, or a myth.

Young Betty Lou, circa 1944
Some are inspired by the love of family. One such is "Betty of Mustard Hollow", which is a story about a young girl growing up in rural Pennsylvania in the 1940's. We meet Betty, learn of her spirit, and how she is much beloved by her family. We also get a look into southwestern Pennsylvania, the landscape and the culture.

In fact, Betty is a rendition of my mom spun from tales she told of her youth. I am still developing the work, so the version included in "Travels of the Heart" 2020 release is a snapshot of the work in progress. My intention is to continue the story and expand the context and characters into a full novel. Until then, enjoy the snippet.
Adult Betty Lou, circa 2016

You can order your copy of "Travels of the Heart" today (available in print and ebook format) and follow the story of a young girl growing up in rural Pennsylvania, along with all the other stories and poems included in the collection.

Love spins many tales. Enjoy a journey through a series of narratives, poems, and stories delving into love in its varied forms You will witness sharing of tender moments, explore unexpected relationships, experience the comfort of happy endings, recall the sweetness of first love, watch the awakening of self for mythic Medusa, follow the life of a young girl growing up in rural Pennsylvania in the 1940's, consider the sensuality of music, and thrill as two soul-mates meet.

Imagine Gardens

Now is the time of year where imaginings about next summer's garden take hold in the minds eye. Seed catalogs arrive in inboxes and mailboxes. Enticing descriptions, beautiful drawings, vivid pictures offer endless possibilities.
I want to grow everything, 5 different varieties of summer squash, an array of beans, lettuces, cucumbers, a bounty of colorful and vibrant flowers, a host of delightful herbs...
Yet, I did not get my greenhouse built this year, so starter space is limited. Also, my fellow and I are talking of moving mid-growing season, so what does that mean for my garden?
There are always a myriad of limiting factors and challenges to planning and growing a garden. Being honest with yourself while garden planning, and open to the possibilities available.

Since I know my starter space is limited, I am taking time to plan. I want to grow starts for market that folks have interest in, and minimize the excess of starts of plants folks might not need this spring. I will seed enough for myself, and calculated quantities for share in sale.
Since I might move mid growing season, I will concentrate on early growers, like peas, summer squash, and lettuces. I will avoid crops that I may never see mature, like kohlrabi or brussel sprout. I will step up my portable container gardens for carrots, spinach, and other crops. I will plant perennial herbs that they may thrive on their own.
Meanwhile, I will still enjoy the bliss of dream gardening as I peruse the catalogs.

Are you planning and dreaming your garden? Or maybe you live in a clime where planting happens now, before the intense heat of summer.
What ever your situation, enjoy the process. Open to possibility. Revel in growth. We are plant lovers, after all.

Check out the seeds available through BeWell Bohemia Herbs and Things. I send anywhere in the continental U.S. Let me know what you plan (or imagine) to grow.

Wish List

Autumn invigorates me  profoundly, yet in a different way than spring. I am busy each day harvesting plant material, from root to seed and most everything in between. The daily labor intensive task of seed saving awakens a wish for seed sorting trays. The trays would simply matters immensely and save time. Perhaps by next growing season I shall have obtained a set.  https://strictlymedicinalseeds.com/product/stainless-steel-and-cedar-seed-cleaning-screens-set-of-8/

I am getting much use out of my thrift store procures dehydrator. I do wish it had a temperature setting, though. Some material requires a lower temperature, lest constituents be lost in the process. Other, denser items, like some roots, do well with a slightly elevated temperature. My dehydrator operates only in 'on' or 'off' options, and I do not know at what temperature it dries. So, on my wish list goes a temperature setting dehydrator.

If dreaming, why not dream big -

Though for a similar price is this large model:

Perhaps a more realistic option for now, given the cost, is this smaller, plastic tray model.

The final item on todays wish list is a greenhouse for seed starting and plant propagating over the winter. I have dreamed of having a greenhouse of my own for 25 years. Someday, maybe.

September is for Seed Saving

Each evening I spend time sifting, sorting, labeling, and loving the seeds I saved from the yarden.
Some plants yielded sufficient seed quantity that I am able to offer them for sale. I save ample supply to start plants in spring, for sale and self. After that quantity is set aside, if seed bank remains, I sort it for sale.
Currently I have ample tulsi, larkspur, columbine, marigold (Tagetes sp.), and heirloom red beans for sale. As I continue to process the seed, I hope to have other varieties to announce.

Seeds, BeWell Bundles, and Workshop Wonders

The bright July sun warms to the very bones. I am reveling in the bliss of summer. The bees buzz lazily from calendula bloom to tulsi blossom.  Subtle yellow flowers of lemon balm bedeck stem after stem.

I have collected seed from the spring blooming columbine flower, and have them available for purchase on my online store. I will also have them at upcoming vending events in the greater Lafayette, Indiana area - watch for details in the coming days.
Hummingbirds love these orange and yellow flowered columbine.

In addition to the promise of future flowers (seeds),  BeWell Bundles, and Workshop Wonders are available.

BeWell Bundles are opportunities for you to regularly receive themed packages, virtual or physical, depending on your selection. Check out the options.

Workshop Wonders are individually crafted by me, Brooke, herbalist and educator. What have workshop participants been saying?

"I learned not only what the plant is, and  that it is edible, and I loved the taste test." Marcie

I liked best that we saw how to make recipes step-by-step, then we got to taste it."

I enjoyed learning about the plants and how easy it is to use them in teas. I was walking through my yard and I thought, 'Hey, there is that ine with the purple rib - I remember that plant.' " Wilma

June - a time of planting, tending, and harvesting

Yesterday I spent hours in the garden completing a wide range of tasks: preparing and planting a tulsi bed; cutting tall grass to use as mulch in garden beds, planting tulsi and basil starts, watering hollyhock seeds and herb transplants, installing fencing, and harvesting lemon balm.  Seems that the tasks to be done outlast the time to do them, which allows the promise of more time in the yarden on the morrow. Bliss.
I am also watching the columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), for soon the seeds will be ripe for harvest.
BeWell Bohemia Herbs and Things is expanding to offer mail order seeds, starting with columbine. Contact me via email or facebook to discuss orders. I will organize a detailed post about the plant and seed sale soon.

Some notes about growing rosemary

Rosemary yields many benefits, from flavor for cooking, to antiseptic properties for cleaning, and a myriad in between. Growing a rosemary plant provides you ongoing access to this magnificent herb.
But how to grow rosemary? asks my brother.
Rosemary heralds from a warm sunny clime, keep that in mind as you select your spot for cultivation.

Some things to know:
1. rosemary seed is difficult to grow - the germination rate is low, and the seedlings are very slow growing. If you are patient and optimistic then, go for it.
2. rosemary propagates most successfully from cuttings

If you have an established rosemary plant, take cuttings and root it up (I will discuss cuttings in a future post, otherwise, try here: https://www.bhg.com/gardening/yard/garden-care/starting-flowers-from-cutting/

If you don't have a plant established yet, then pick up a rosemary plant from a garden center, nursery, or local gardener.

Once you have a healthy rosemary, choose a site suited to its growth.

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs asserts that rosemary does not thrive in a container because of the needs of the root to expand and remain dry. Since a container is enclosed, there is little space for the roots to reach outward, and if the soil holds water, the conditions are too damp for the roots.  If you must use a container, choose a large container and use especially well draining soil, and watch the soil is not too long between waterings that the plant suffers a lack of water.

Rather, plant rosemary, which is a perennial in zones 8 - 10, in the ground. Choose a sunny location. Rosemary will tolerate full sun, in fact prefers full sun. Rosemary, however, does not like shady spots. Rosemary does not transplant well, again think of those spreading roots, so plant it in its 'forever home' directly from the first.

Rosemary is tolerant of a wide range of soil types; though, not a spot where drainage is especially slow, or water tends to collect. Remember the challenges posed by wet or slow draining soil in a container? Same principle, in the ground.  If the soil is acidic, "apply lime, wood ashes, crushed eggshells, or crushed seashells every two to three years" advises Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs.

Quick reference:

  • full sun
  • well-drained soil
  • infrequent watering unless very dry conditions
  • neutral soil pH preferred
Rosemary makes an excellent companion to certain other plants. The article, "Companion Planting with Herbs: Boost Your Garden this Season with the Right Pairings of Plants", published in the Spring 2018 issue of Herb Quarterly magazine explains that many members of the brassica family, cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage, "get a boost by their proximity to rosemary" since the rosemary aroma confuses the cabbage butterfly (cabbage white) and simultaneously "repels several types of flies and beetles." However, do not "plant rosemary by squash, pumpkins, potatoes, or carrots [because rosemary] will inhibit their growth." Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs states that rosemary will also enhance bean plants.

In addition to plant starts, what does BeWell Bohemia Herbs and Things offer?

Hello, spring here in Indiana is progressing. The plant starts still steadily grow and are ready for finding garden homes.
If you are local, near Otterbein, IN, I will have a yarden sale in conjunction with the local elementary school 5k fundraiser that occurs this Saturday in my neighborhood. Email or facebook message me if you want to attend.
I will also be hosting stalls at public events in Lafayette, Frankfort, and Crawfordsville Indiana in the coming weeks - I will keep you posted on details as the planning is confirmed.

Meanwhile, I also offer other services.
You can schedule a consult to discuss adding herbs to your garden, or planning a new garden. Consults are available in person if you are local, or via technical connection media remotely (Facebook messenger, Skype, Google Hangouts, or the like - we can arrange a format that works for you.)
The consultation includes an initial 45 minute discussion, follow-up research I conduct and compile into a reference document specific to your goals and questions, then a follow-up session where we talk through the material and any secondary questions, concerns, comments. This 3 part consultation session costs $40.

I also offer workshops - which I can host locally or if you have a group of far flung friends who want to share a workshop experience, I can host a remote session.
Topics for workshops include:
  • Garden Planning
  • Plant Talks
  • Herbal Tea Making
  • Herbalism Overview as a Wellness Support Strategy
  • Garden Journaling
  • Creating an Herbal Study Journal
  • Creative Journaling
Workshop prices vary depending on content, necessary supplies, and duration, so message or email me to initiate a discussion.

In person workshops include a day-of take away.
Remote workshops involve a pre-order of supplies to be sent to each participant in advance of the workshop.

Keep an eye on the website (blog) for further details as I develop workshops.
